OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME
The overall goal of the programme is to provide quality certificate level training and research in peace and security to enable to enable our students analyze threats to peace and security and develop appropriate strategies conflicts so as to understand the underlying causes and to apply appropriate strategies to manage or resolve them.
ELIGIBILITY
- O’Level
Candidate for admission into the certificate Programme in peace and security studies in peace and Security studies in the Universityof Port Harcourt should possesses a Senior Secondary School Certificate or Genral Certificate of Education of West African Examination Council (WAEC) or National Examination Council (SSCE-WAEC/NECO) or their equivalent with at least five credit passes in relevant subjects including Mathematics and English Language at not more than two sittings.

Students who wish to apply for admission into year onefull time in the departments in the Social Sciences or Humanities after the certificate programmewill requirea pass in JAMB examination: meeting the national cut–off point for the relevant year.
MODE OF APPLICATION
Requests for application forms should be made to the Director for the peace and security Studies, Basic Unit Building, University of Port Harcourt, such requests mustbe accompanied by the stipulated fee.

The course delivery methods will include lectures, group work, case studies, critical reading, discussion and self-assessment. Students will be exposed to online materials to improve their access to diverse sources of reading sources.

CPSS 010.1 BASIC SOCIOLOGY
The course introduces basic concepts on sociology such as culture, socialization society, social intergrato etc. Students will be exposed to how culture originates and forms the basis for ethnic, religious and political identities.The course will also trace the existence and prevalence of deviance and socialconflicts to culture and educate students on how cultural change can be engineered.
CPSS 020.1 INTRODUCTION TO POLITICS
In this course students will be taught the basic components of a political system comprising Leadership, Followership, Political Parties, Methods of selecting leaderspolitics and morality etc. The students will acquire knowledge on the implications of government legitimacy, patriotism and national cohesion. Much emphasis shall be placed on politics as a source of social conflicts.
CPSS 030.1 BASIC ECONOMICS
The course is aimed at providing students with and understanding of the principles of production, transportation and consumption of goods and services. The students will also acquire knowledge in the nature, dynamics and implications of the structure of the Nigeria economy. Futhermore, the nexus between economic activities and social conflicts will be discussed.
CPSS 040.1 HUMANS AND THE ENVIRONMENT
The aim of this course is to expose the students to man’s activities in relation to the cosmic environment. The course will identify the renewable and non-renewable resources as well as environmental effects of chemical materials and their implications of man’ welfare. The course contents consist of man and his environment, scientific methodology, science and technology in the society and service of man, renewable and non-renewable resources, environmental effects of chemical materials and chemical hazards.
CPSS 050.1 COMMUNICATION IN ENGLISH
Communication in English emphasises the principles of cultivating effective writing and speaking skills as tools of communication. The course is not only theoretical, but also comprises accurate application of such knowledge in real,day to day instances of both formal and informal communication. It is designed to improve writing and speaking skills of students in English in order to communicate effectively using English language in diverse social and academic settings.
CPSS 060.1 HISTORY OF NIGERIA
The course will provide students with the basic knowledge about the evolution and creation of Nigerian state. It will highlight the nature of precolonial states and their Institutional frameworks and howthey had operated prior to the advent of British colonization in the 19th century. It will also examine the nature British colonial rule, the responses of the nationalist movements and the processes that led to political independence in 1960. Beyond understanding the nature and course of colonial politics, the course will analyse the nature of postcolonial governance and processes of statebuilding since independence and their implications for peace and security in Nigeria.
CPSS 070.2 NATURE AND SOURCES OF SOCIAL CONFLICT
By the nature of human society, conflict is inevitable in social life. It is rooted in social differences of class and status, of wealth and opportunity, of material interests, where scarce resources are unequally shared. The course identifies the biological, psychological and material sources of social conflict. The course analyses conflicts arriving from insurgence and Terrorism from a global perpective.
CPSS 080.2 NATIONAL, REGIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL CONFLICTS
This course seeks to achieve the appreciation by students of issues on peace , conflict, violence and confrontation in human societies. Students are introduced to the global wars which shaped history on grand scales and to the regional and local conflicts that persist in the background particularly in Africa. Our approach in this course is integrative, interrogative and critical. We analyse the causes of war and conflict; the nature of security and strategic decision-making; the political drivers of international and sub-national conflicts; the use of technologies and tactics; and the public presentation of war and conflict.
CPSS 090.2 SOCIAL CONFLICTS IN NIGERIA
The coursedraws particular attention to Nigeria as a nation and the faultlines which produce conflict. The dysfunctional integration of different cultures, the attendant ethno-religious facilitatiors of conflict, the boundary disputes, resource control struggles and the agitations for restructuring or secession shall be discussed.
CPSS 010.2 CONTEMPORARY PEACE AND SECURITY ISSUES IN NIGERIA
This course will explore the current and future security challenges facing Nigerian states. Particular attention will be paid to the dominant types of conflict in contemporary Nigeria: civil wars, violent extremism, kidnapping, and riots and protests. Attention will be paid to the activities of Boko Haram, Fulani Herdsmen as well as Banditry.
CPSS 011.2 CONFLICT MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES
In this course, students will learn how to deal with conflict situations, set clear expectations, and how to manage yourself and others in these difficult situations. Sudents will understand the nature of conflict and understand when conflict is positive or negative. We will also learn different techniques of resolving conflicts in Nigeria.
CPSS 012.2 PRINCIPLES OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
This course introduces students to basic concepts in the study of International Relations such as state, non-state actors, power, national interests, foreign policy, International Security, collective security, balanceof power, human rights, conflict, multilaterial diplomacy and globalization amongst others. It will also examine the changing dynamics and the nature of actors in International relations and how these actors interact amongst one another to pursue and achieve their interests. Finally, it will introduce students to understanding the place of Africa in global politics in the era of globalization.
CPSS 013.2 PHILOSOPHY OF PEACE AND SECURITY
The course is designed to expose students to the philosophical foundations of the issuess of peace and security, beginning with the works of such early philosophers as Socrates, Plato Hobbes and Maccheavelli. Furthermore the nature , source and resolution of conflict as expressed in the works of some contemporary philosophers like Karl Marx, Robert Merton and Ralph Dahreadorf will be discussed.
